Chargebacks and Card-to-Crypto Payments: What Merchants Should Know

When customers pay by card through an on-ramp and you receive USDC, who handles a dispute? Here's how card disputes, refunds and settlement finality work.

Chargebacks are a major cost for online merchants: lost revenue, dispute fees and the risk of losing your processor. Card-to-crypto checkout changes who sits in the middle of a card dispute. Here's what that means in practice.

Who sells what

When your customer pays by card through an on-ramp, the on-ramp is the company that charges the card and sells the stablecoin. You receive USDC in your wallet as an on-chain transfer.

  • Card disputes are raised with the card issuer and handled with the company that charged the card — the on-ramp, under its own policies.
  • The USDC transfer to your wallet is a blockchain transaction. Nobody can pull it back from your wallet.

What this doesn't change

  • You still owe your customer what you sold. Deliver as described, communicate clearly, honor your refund policy. Unhappy customers have other routes than chargebacks — reviews, complaints, regulators.
  • Refunds are your responsibility. If you agree to a refund, send it from your wallet (in USDC or by arrangement).
  • On-ramps watch for abuse. A merchant whose customers frequently dispute payments may find providers become unavailable for their checkout.

Reducing disputes anyway

  • Use a clear product name and description on the payment page.
  • Show your brand (logo, colors) so customers recognize the charge.
  • Send a confirmation email with what was bought.
  • Respond to complaints quickly and refund when it's fair.

Crypto payments

Direct crypto payments (USDT, USDC, BTC and others sent from a wallet) are final by design — there is no card network involved at all.

Frequently asked questions

Can a customer reverse a USDC payment I received?

Not on-chain. Once USDC arrives in your wallet, nobody else can move it. Card disputes are handled between the card issuer and the provider that charged the card.

Do I still need a refund policy?

Yes. Publish one and follow it. Clear policies reduce disputes and keep providers available for your checkout.

Are crypto payments refundable?

Only if you send the funds back. That's why it's important to confirm the customer's refund address carefully.

Will high dispute rates affect me?

Providers may stop serving checkouts with unusual dispute patterns, which reduces the payment options your customers see.
